Hugh T. Copeland, 71, pleaded not guilty Wednesday, Nov. 7 to 18 counts of felony charges related to the alleged sexual assault of a child over a two-year period.
A 71-year-old Homewood man pleaded not guilty Wednesday, Nov. 7 to 18 felony counts of criminal sexual assault and abuse stemming from allegations that he abused a juvenile over two years. Hugh T. Copeland has been in custody since Oct. 3 on a $300,000 D bond, which means he would need to have $30,000 to be released. Dressed in the customary khaki-colored Cook County Department of Corrections garb, Copeland entered his plea alongside his attorney Wayne Johnson in Judge Michele Simmons' Markham courtroom. Assistant State's Attorney Jennifer Bagby will be prosecuting the case and counsel exchanged evidence as they begin the pre-trial discovery phase. As a bespectacled elderly man was led by sheriff's deputies into a courtroom of the Markham courthouse Wednesday, Oct. 3, murmurs arose from the seated crowd as some wondered what the man could have done. That murmuring stopped as Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Richard Stake Jr. read the charges against 71-year-old Hugh T. Copeland: aggravated sexual assault of a child. A stunned silence took its place. Authorities say Copeland of Homewood sexually assaulted a juvenile over the course of two years, with the most recent incident occurring on Aug. 12. Homewood Police are investigating 14 similar instances after Warren P. Montgomery was charged after assaulting two Homewood residents.
A Chicago man who was charged on Monday, June 6 after allegedly assaulting his Homewood girlfriend and choking her daughter has been investigated by the Homewood Police Department in 14 other related incidents with that same girlfriend, according to police. Warren P. Montgomery, 32, of the 2100 block of W. 114th St., is charged with two counts of domestic battery after police say he punched his girlfriend in the mouth, then choked her juvenile daughter with his hands around her neck. The girl defended herself by hitting Montgomery with her fists as he was choking her, according to the report. A Homewood party turned traumatic for a South Chicago Heights woman last weekend.
A South Chicago Heights woman said she believed she was drugged and sexually assaulted at a Homewood party last weekend, and the case is under active investigation, police said. The woman received treatment at St. James Hospital, where a rape kit was collected and the woman's clothing were turned over to Homewood police, acording to the report. The woman told police she attended a party Saturday in the 1200 block of Jeffery Drive, where she met a man who identified himself only as "Chuck," police said. The woman said she wore a T-shirt, jogging pants and underwear to the party, but lost consciousness and awoke in an upstairs bedroom hours later, undressed except for a loosened brassiere. Macdonald A. Arrey was so intoxicated while driving, police had to park his car for him, according to reports.
A 56-year-old Glenwood man was charged with driving under the influence and improper lane use after an officer had to park the man’s SUV for him, according to the report. Macdonald A. Arrey, of the 1100 block of Wisconsin Street, was observed driving erratically in a silver sports utility vehicle shortly before midnight, police said. After witnessing the vehicle cross the road line several times, an officer activated his siren and lights and pulled Arrey over, according to the report. Arrey pulled over, scraping tires along the sidewalk, but was unable to put the car in park, police said. TUESDAY, MAY 3 Police say two men went on a "fishing expedition" at the Homewood Jewel-Osco store, then fled after a confrontation with the manager. The two men approached the meat counter, and requested a quantity of fish which totaled $190, according to the police report. The two men then rolled their shopping cart to Aisle Three in the grocery store, where a store employee saw one of the men slide the fish beneath his navy blue coat, police said. The two men tried to leave but were confronted by a store employee who demanded they return the fish, police said. Broken Window Someone broke the rear window of a Hazel Crest man’s vehicle sometime between 2 and 2:30 a.m. on the 18300 block of Cowing Court, according to police.
