H-F Resident: 'Come and Sit in Our Yard'

'Pocket Parks' are popping up in Homewood—and the owners are hoping you'll come and sit a spell.

Homewood-Flossmoor residents have some new places to park it this summer. 

The arrival of new benches—planted in "pocket parks" in the neighborhood—are part of residents' efforts to bring people together. Two residents started the parks to "provide respite and a moment to enjoy, share in the finer things, be they reading, writing, enjoying, offering art and/or partaking in good conversation."

“It was kind of a weekend project, the concept was in our front yard,” said Steve Ploum, owner of La Salon pocket park. “It’s really just about talking to other people and saying, ‘come and sit in our yard.’ …

The two parks, called La Salon: Un Parc de Poche, and Hummingbird Park, are both open to the public from dawn 'til dusk. Salon also offers visitors a sketch pad and colored pencils, in the hopes that they'll leave behind a bit of their creative spirt.

“We both kind of have things that make our parks unique,” Ploum said. “Ours has the drawings, which I then take a picture of and put on the Facebook (page).”
