Making the Most of Parent-Teacher Conferences

As a parent, one of the best ways to participate in your child’s education is to attend parent-teacher conferences. Discussing your child’s needs, goals, and progress in the classroom with his or her instructors can be as important to their academic success as doing the homework and taking the tests.

Fortunately, having an effective and productive parent-teacher conference is easy as asking the right questions. If you know what you’re after, your child’s teacher most likely has the answer (They do, after all, spend hours each day with our children.).

Typically, parents should inquire about their student’s behavior, attitude, effort, performance, and socialization in and around the classroom. By the same token, if you’ve noticed your student struggling with a particular class—with its content, workload, or otherwise—that is important to ask about, too. Really, no questions are off limits if you feel they are important to your child’s success at school.
