A "small amount" of dimethylhydrazine was discovered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the Homewood Army Reserve Center while they were working on a base expansion project, reports the Sun-Times Media.
The chemical is a component of rocket fuel, likely left over from the Nike surface-to-air missiles that used to be stored at the facility.

A crew of Homewood firefighters have been tasked with the cleanup job. They expect to be finished by Thursday morning.

UPDATED on Sept. 4, 2013 at 1:40 p.m.

Crews from Homewood Fire Department are responding to a reported hazardous materials situation at the Army Reserve Center on 18960 Halsted Street.

The nature of the hazardous materials call was not immediately known. The call went out at about 12:15 p.m.

We were unable to get any closer to the emergency crews than the perimeter fence of the Army facility. From that perspective, there were no visible signs of anything gone awry.
