Slain 19-Year-Old Man Was Acquainted with His Attacker: Police

Henry Kormoi was shot in the 1100 block of 187th Street in Homewood Tuesday night and pronounced dead at South Suburban Hospital.

Police say a 19-year-old man knew the gunman that killed him Tuesday night outside of his house in Homewood.

Henry Kormoi of the 1100 block of 187th Street, was pronounced dead at 11:47 p.m. Tuesday at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, according to authorities. He was shot at least once. Homewood police have yet to announce any arrests or release a description of a suspect in the shooting.

Friends of Kormoi were shocked to find out he was the target. Two men, who wished to remain anonymous, told Patch they had known him for at least seven years.

"He was a good person. He had a good heart," one of the men, who lives in the same neighborhood as Kormoi, told Patch.

Officers were called at about 11:08 p.m. to the 1100 block of 187th Street on a report that a man had been shot, according to a release by the Homewood Police Department Wednesday afternoon. Kormoi succumbed to his injuries after he was taken to the hospital.

The South Suburban Major Crimes and the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services Division are assisting with the case. Investigators believe that Kormoi knew or was acquainted with the shooter.

According to police records, Kormoi was arrested on June 14 and charged with delivering marijuana. Officers allegedly spotted him making a deal in the near the intersection of Riegel Road and Ashland Avenue. He was expected to appear in Markham court on July 9.

Police have not commented on the drug case in connection with Tuesday's shooting.

Some neighbors were drawn outside as police cars and yellow crime scene tape blocked off two blocks of 187th Street.

"I've never seen anything like this out here," said Tobias Cichon, 38, who has lived in the neighborhood for three years.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Homewood Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit at 708-206-3420.
