Chickens Can Nest in Homewood Yards

Trustees last week signed off on an ordinance allowing chickens to be kept on property within the village.

Homewood trustees April 25 approved an ordinance permitting chickens to be kept within village limits. Trustees voted

Under the ordinance, residents are allowed to keep a maximum of six hens in restricted backyard settings.  Each prospective chicken owner will have to apply for a license, and each henhouse will require inspection. Residents with chickens must build the fenced-in coops at least 30 feet from any buildings on a neighbor’s property, as required by the ordinance.

The owners must sink a fence at least a foot into the ground to ward off predators, among other restrictions.
